The Things are discrete parts of the Vast which ensemble it and either allow it to study itself or to change itself in come way. Thus, for example those Things known as the Beings use other Things known as the Entities to measure and iconize the Vast, and to alter parts of the Vast in order to assert dominion over and tailor it for specific ends.
